What is a FibroScan
A FibroScan is a non-invasive medical device used to assess liver stiffness and fat content, helping diagnose conditions like liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and fatty liver disease.
-
How it works
FibroScan uses transient elastography, a form of ultrasound technology. It sends a painless vibration through the liver and measures how quickly the wave travels. Stiffer liver tissue (due to scarring or fibrosis) transmits the wave faster.
-
Why it's used
· Detect liver fibrosis (scarring)
· Monitor progression of chronic liver diseases
· Assess fatty liver content
-
Advantages
· Non-invasive (no needles or surgery)
· Quick (usually 10-15 minutes)
· Painless
· Immediate results
· Useful alternative to liver biopsy
-
Preparing for a FibroScan
· Do not eat or drink anything (except water) for at least 3 hours before the procedure.
· Wear loose, comfortable clothing so the technician can easily access your upper abdomen
